. it was actually quite a bit of fun to watch. cbs 5 political reporter grace lee on the vice presidential debate that was hard to turn away from. >> politics can be fun, dana. it certainly was tonight. apparently even the president thought so, calling biden's performance, quote, terrific and saying he couldn't be prouder of him. and it is showing in the polls. in a cbs news poll of uncommitted voters, 58% gave him the win, compared with 31% for paul ryan. asked who would be able to take over as president, if necessary, voters stayed with the republican nominee. but that shifted significantly after the face-off. perhaps because time and again the president's attack dog in chief showed why he had earned that nickname. >> reporter: they are a generation apart in age. and world's apart in ideology. with that, two phrases were laid down. >> these people are my mom and dad, the people i grew up with, my neighbors. they pay more effective tax than governor romney's pays. i've had it up to here with that notion of 47%. >> reporter: congressman ryan was not afraid to fight back. >> romney is a good man.

(laughs) captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> pelley: good evening. as of today we are down to the final four weeks of the presidential campaign. the focus is narrowing, not just to the nine battleground states but to one in particular-- ohio, which could tip the balance on election night. first the big picture. nationally, the latest gallup poll shows mitt romney leading president obama 49% to 47%. that spread is within the margin of error, so it's essentially a tie. in ohio, new polling today shows this: pollster a.r.g. has romney up by one point, 48% to 47%. but a cnn poll has the president up by four, 51% to 47%. either way, it's an improvement for romney who was falling well behind in ohio until last week's debate. both candidates were in ohio today where this is the last day to register to vote. our campaign 2012 correspondents are there, too, and we'll go to nancy cordes with the obama campaign. >> reporter: scott, ohio is the grand prize for the obama campaign. they have 120 field offices here, the

the victory. according to cbs 51% of uncommitted voters said joe biden won the debate compared with 31% for paul ryan. connell: i was a little surprised but polls can be all over the place. the reason i was surprised -- [talking over each other] connell: i thought he appealed to the choir, people already lights and whereas those who didn't like it would reinforce things they didn't like but the uncommitted in this poll liked him. lou: you raise a very good point. the fact is had joe biden not been so over the top aggressive, disrespectful of the decorum required for that, compare as we did, his performance in 2008 with what he did last night are two different people. he was constrained, respectful, focused in 2008. what we witnessed from this vice president west night is the antithesis of everything that happened in 2008. dagen: you have to be very careful when you are debating a woman because if you have a certain age to you, you look like a chauvinist. it is a rule of politics. you have to be careful. lou: and will back up a little of my chair now. dagen: as a man how you address a w

today points to a very tight race. according to "new york times"/cbs news poll, mitt romney leads the president by one point in colorado. tight across the country. last month the president up one point in that state n virginia, president obama's lead from last month grew slightly. in wisconsin, the candidates also within the margin of error after the president lost the point from last month and mitt romney gained two. again this is all within the margin of error. a day after mitt romney, meanwhile, told the des moines register he would not pursue any abortion related legislation as president, mr. romney looked to clarify that position while campaigning in ohio. there he told reporters he would take action from the white house to reduce the number of abortions in the country. >> i think i said time and again i'm a pro-life candidate. i'll be a pro-life president. the actions i'll take immediately are to remove funding for planned parenthood. >> remove funding for planned parenthood. he said he would ban taxpayer funding for groups that perform abortions overseas. in an interview wi
